About Us

Elm Therapy Services is run by Occupational Therapist Suzi Rodd, who has extensive experience and expertise in working with adults and children with a wide range of complex needs. This includes providing specialist assessments and determining functional changes in ability.

Suzi works as an independent Occupational Therapist, liaising with clients, families, Case Managers and support workers to ensure rehabilitation programmes are holistic, focussed, co-ordinated, and implemented in the best possible way for her clients.

Based in Plymouth, she has developed solid working relationships with statutory services throughout Devon and Cornwall and further afield.

Suzi's role encompasses many things. For her, working with a patient whose life has irrevocably changed, means:

  • approaching the person as an individual and acknowledging their hopes, fears, frustrations and behaviours

  • building a long-term relationship based on trust and understanding

  • keeping people safe until they can do so themselves

  • problem-solving: a step-by-step approach to getting clients to where they want to be

  • making sure carers are included and provided for, so they can cope with what's to come

  • giving people back their dignity

  • giving people achievable goals to motivate them day to day

  • approaching challenging situations with empathy and a sense of humour

People who have suffered a life-changing event commonly experience anxiety, low mood and frustration. Suzi is experienced in helping clients cope with such complex emotions following an injury or illness.

She is also used to supporting those who were already dealing with anxiety, learning difficulties, and drug or alcohol dependency before an acute change in their circumstances.

Suzi also works on a consultative basis as a Case Manager and assesses claimants for litigation purposes. More details of these roles can be found on the Services page.

At Elm Therapy Services we "predict forwards to treat backwards".

At Elm Therapy Services we "predict forwards to treat backwards". This means looking ahead and asking where a person will be in ten years' time if we don't intervene? Then, putting into place a plan of action to achieve the best possible outcome for the years ahead.

Broadly speaking, our services cover these areas:

Assessment: gathering all relevant information from the client and those around them to develop an appreciation their illness or injury and how it affects their independence and mobility in their daily life.

Planning: developing a comprehensive plan with all concerned, outlining rehabilitation goals and the support needed to achieve independence.

Implementation: where necessary, providing a programme of occupational therapy and hands on care, regularly reviewed and monitored to ensure the client's needs are met.

Liaison: ensuring access to all services, including specialist NHS services, through effective liaison.

Additional services, provided on a consultative basis:

Somek & Associates - compiling medico-legal reports, the findings of which are used in court to indicate a claimant's past, present and future needs for equipment, care and housing.

Elm Case Management - providing Case Management services for adults and children with brain injury and/or complex physical and psychological disabilities.

Elm Care Management - providing support workers and Team Leaders who are highly trained and motivated to support her clients in any way they can.

Independent living and the ability to move freely without pain or difficulty are often taken for granted, until accident, injury or illness force us to reassess our everyday activities and seek professional support.

Elm Therapy Services helps adults and children with complex physical needs to learn the necessary skills to overcome the daily challenges which impact their lives, their livelihood and their overall well-being. We also educate and support their relatives and carers on a shared journey to greater independence.

The needs and wishes of our clients are the focus of everything we do.
